Nassau County police arrested an East Rockaway man for allegedly driving while intoxicated on Wednesday at 12:41 p.m.

According to the Nassau County Police Department, Edward Coghlan, 73, was driving his 2004 Lincoln sedan when he struck a 2018 Subaru sedan in the parking lot of Wendy's at 80 Ocean Ave. in East Rockaway. Coghlan then drove away southbound, while the operator of the other vehicle followed him until he crashed into a metal chain-link fence at Rhame Avenue Elementary School.

After Choglan crashed through the fence, staff members got all students back inside the school safely. In all, there were about 80 students and several staff members outside when the incident occurred.

Coghlan allegedly continued to drive across the school's field at a high rate of speed before once again leaving the scene. NCPD officers from the Fourth Precinct found Coghlan driving on West Boulevard and placed him under arrest without further incident. There were no injuries reported.

Coghlan was charged with driving while intoxicated, two counts of fourth-degree criminal mischief, second-degree reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child. He was arraigned Thursday in Mineola.
