Senior Town of Hempstead Councilwoman Dorothy L. Goosby held a surefire lead late Tuesday in her re-election bid against Republican challenger James Lamarre in the 1st council district.

According to preliminary results released by the Nassau County Board of Elections on Tuesday evening, Goosby had 9,746 votes and Lamarre had 1,343 votes, putting the incumbent Goosby ahead 88 percent to 12 percent.

Goosby, who has served on the council since 2000, has been reelected each cycle since then by up to 93 percent of the vote.

The 83-year-old incumbent is the only person of color and woman on the council. A major local civil rights figure, she has focused on issues related to revitalization and quality of life during her 20-year tenure on the council. More recently, she has emphasized the business and health needs arising from the coronavirus pandemic.

Lamarre, 45, is a resident of West Hempstead resident and the owner and president of a commercial cleaning company.

Goosby said she would prioritize renovating the town’s sewage system and focus on making water more affordable for residents. Finally, she has expressed concern about charter schools diverting resources from public schools, which are already underfunded in the district.

Absentee ballots are yet to be counted. All results are unofficial as of print time.
