Describing his decade-long tenure at document management and imaging company Seery Systems Group in Garden City as a “wonderful experience,” Richard Muller, of West Hempstead, emphasized that he has enjoyed his success: “It’s been a fun 10 years,” he said.

Muller was named Employee of the Year by New York State Industries for the Disabled, a nonprofit dedicated to creating jobs for individuals with disabilities. Seery Systems Group, which employs 20 disabled individuals, was named Corporate Partner of the Year by the nonprofit.

Born in 1991, Muller, who is disabled, grew up in West Hempstead and attended school at St. Thomas the Apostle. When he arrived at the company in 2011, Muller did not possess any business knowledge or skillset, Rich Seery, the company owner, noted.

But Muller has quickly climbed the ladder.

“He adapted very quickly,” Seery said of Muller. “He’s our go-to guy — he does a great job.” Today, he often works with information technology and production staff and currently holds the position of assistant manager.

Seery described Muller as a key part of the company’s work, adding that he is particularly skilled at document preparation and scanning. He understands the ins and outs of the hardware and software used by the company better than many other employees, Seery noted.

Seery and Muller also share a lifelong personal connection.

A lifelong resident of West Hempstead, Seery, 60, lived at one time in a home across the street from Muller’s parents. Once Seery’s wife became friends with Muller’s parents, Muller grew up with his children.

Seery said that he has enjoyed watching Muller develop his skillset and confidence over the years. He added that Muller recently decided to earn his driver’s license and began to drive, after years of riding a bicycle to work.

“From a business perspective and a personal one, he has come a long way,” Seery said of Muller. “His success comes from showing up every day to work and giving it his all. He gets the job done and he is laser-focused.”

“This job has given me the means to evolve and realize that if you work hard and put your best foot forward, you can move up the ladder,” Muller said.
