Memorial Day is a solemn occasion to honor and respect men and women who sacrificed their life while serving in the U.S. military. It is an annual tradition in communities across the country, and here on Long Island, neighbors take pride in honoring those who sacrificed.

Here is a partial listing of nearby Memorial Day parades:

SUB HED: Malverne

The annual Memorial Day parade in Malverne will be held on Monday, May 29 starting at 10 a.m.

The parade begins at the gazebo at Chester A. Reese Veterans Memorial Park on Church Street. The parade route continues through the Westwood Section, and returns to Church Street at 11:15 a.m. for a ceremony and wreath lying.

Participating in the parade are: Malverne Village officials and community leaders, American Legion Post 44, Sons of the American Legion Post 44, American Legion Auxiliary Post 44, Malverne Chamber of Commerce, Malverne Civic Association, The “Pride of Malverne” High School Marching Band, Malverne Volunteer Ambulance Corps, the Malverne Fire Department, and many more.

SUB HED: West Hempstead

The West Hempstead Memorial Day parade will take place on Monday, May 29 starting at 10 a.m.

The parade begins at the St. Thomas the Apostle Chapel at 875 Hempstead Ave. and continues on Hempstead Avenue to Woodlawn Road. The parade will then turn right on Woodlawn Road and end at the American Legion Post 1087.

Popular viewing areas for the parade are in front of the Young Israel of West Hempstead, Hebrew Academy of Nassau County Elementary School, Bagel Town, Creative Corner, Congregation Anshei Shalom, The Sunflower Bake Shop, Sauly’s Pizza, and Reisterer’s Bakery.
