Many hands, light work

Community gathers to clean the streets

Posted

Armed with brooms, rakes and gloves, volunteers were ready to hit the streets on Sunday, May 2. The South Merrick Community Civic Association joined with the Merrick Community Cleanup Crew to spearhead a massive effort to clean up Merrick Avenue.

The group gathered at the gazebo at the Merrick train station and proceeded to clean the station, Merrick Avenue and Sunrise Highway. Hempstead Town Clerk Kate Murray presented citations to the two organizations, which were represented by SMCCA Vice President Berta Weinstein, SMCCA board members Tricia Sattar and Dr. Fred Jones, and Cleanup Crew organizer Bernard Macias.

It was a sunny morning perfect for the occasion — weather that’s hopefully repeated during the next cleanup on May 16. Anyone can join the volunteers, who will meet at the corner at Merrick Road and Hewlett Avenue at 9 a.m. — all you need is a mask, gloves and any tools you may need.
