Synagogues unite for Israel Independence Day

Posted

Jews from Bellmore and Merrick came together on April 23 to celebrate Israel’s 67th birthday.

The Israel Independence Day party took place at Ohav Sholom in Merrick. There was barbecue food, dancing, entertainment for children and plentiful displays of love and pride for Israel.

Congregants and leaders of seven local synagogues — Bellmore Jewish Centre, Merrick Jewish Centre, Ohav Sholom, Temple Beth Am of Merrick and Bellmore, Temple Beth-El of Bellmore, Temple Israel of South Merrick, Young Israel of Merrick — took part. The Merrick-Bellmore Jewish Community Council helped organize the event.

Yom Haatzmaut, Israel’s national holiday, celebrates the country’s founding in 1948. Its date is set in the lunisolar Hebrew calendar and thus varies in the solar Gregorian calendar. It took place this year from April 22 to 23.
