Mount Sinai staff accept vaccine mandate

Local hospitals are in the midst of dismissing staff who refuse to get a Covid-19 vaccine after a state mandate took effect in late September. Oceanside’s Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital has seen few of its staff dismissed and is now reviewing applications for religious and medical exemptions.

A MSSN spokesman reported that the hospital is sending out 14 letters of separation to staff who have not shown proof of vaccination out of the 3,657 full- and part-time staff. That figure does not include the 100 or so employees who have pending requests for religious or medical exemptions, which are being reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

The state deadline from Governor Hochul for health-care workers to receive at least one vaccine was Sept. 27.

“Mount Sinai South Nassau supports the New York state and federal mandates that health-care workers receive the Covid-19 vaccine to protect themselves, their loved ones, the community and the patients we serve,” a statement from the hospital read.

The hospital reported that it was at 99 percent compliance at press time.
