Panaghia of Island Park Greek Orthodox Church celebrated the Epiphany Jan. 8 following the Divine Liturgy service. In the Greek Orthodox Church, during Epiphany, services include special verses and hymns, as well as a special gathering called the Service of the Sanctification of the Waters celebrating Jesus’s emergence from the water following his baptism.
At Masone Beach, the water was blessed and a cross was thrown in with members vying to retrieve it. The one to retrieve it was offered a blessing for the new year.
