Baldwin Relay for Life donates to local pantry

Baldwin’s Relay for Life has been collecting non-perishable food items for the St. Christopher’s Church food pantry since May 20.

The food drive was the brainchild of Jennifer Scarduzio, and the group dropped off their donations on June 12. The pantry, coordinated by Outreach Director Julia Santiago and located at 11 Gave Ave., is open every Tuesday from 12 to 3 p.m.

“Being that Baldwin’s Relay for Life has been postponed, this is our way of giving back to the community,” said Abby Melendez, a cancer survivor who volunteers for the American Cancer Society and organizes the Relay for Life event. Melendez and her husband, Miguel, are both cancer survivors who volunteer for the organization.

Organizers are currently working on putting together a virtual Relay with a tentative date of Aug. 22. Those who are interested can follow the Facebook page “Relay for Life of Baldwin NY.”

Melendez and her husband, from Team Butterflies of Hope, were joined by Scarduzio and Renee Salmon from Team Because We Care for Jen. They, along with Marie Burns and Carey-Ann Zinn, make up the Event Leadership Committee for the Baldwin Relay.
