A pleasant poetry immersion in Seaford

Seaford students get to explore many different types of writing, and the focus in April was on poetry.

It was a natural choice for National Poetry Month, with children at Seaford Harbor and Manor elementary schools reading different styles of poems, learning about noted poets and composing original pieces.

Harbor fourth graders in Laura Liepa’s class read poetry about colors. First, they made predictions on what they thought a poem would say about a specific color, before reading it and making comparisons.

They also wrote their own diamante poems, which are seven lines and don’t rhyme, with the first and the last lines being just one word each. Children wrote about two opposites, such as hot and cold or cats and dogs.

In AnneMarie Motisi’s second grade class at Manor, students wrote poems that started with a big feeling and a big topic. Motisi then asked students to “zoom in” on a specific moment, memory or object. Their writing had to use words that reflected the mood of the poem. Students also worked with repetition and patterns.
