The auditorium at Temple B’nai Torah in Wantagh came alive with music, laughter and a bit of magic on May 3 as the Mainstage Players opened their production of Mary Poppins.

The family-friendly musical, based on the beloved tale of a whimsical nanny who brings order and joy to the Banks household, features a cast of more than 40 performers ranging in age from 8 to over 70. With colorful costumes, lively choreography and classic songs like “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” the show delighted the audience during its opening weekend.

The production is a true community effort, produced by temple member Lisa Shubin and directed by her husband, Tom Reilly. Cast members rehearsed several times a week since January to bring the story to life.

“It’s a fun show, and people who come will have a great time,” Shubin said.

Marni Tessler, 30, stars in the title role and has been involved in temple productions since she was a child. She said working with the younger cast members has been a highlight of the experience.

Jeff Minkowsky plays Bert, the cheerful chimney sweep, while his daughters Lila and Arielle appear as Jane Banks and an ensemble toy, respectively. His wife, Rachel, takes the role of Mrs. Brill, the Banks family’s cook.

For Minkowsky, performing is more than just a hobby — it’s a bonding experience.

“It was the best decision we ever made,” he said of joining the temple’s theater group. “It takes teamwork, and we put on great shows every year — and this should be no different.”

Shubin noted that the production has helped foster lasting relationships across generations.

“It really helps the children feel a connection to the synagogue,” she said.
