A night of celebration at Freeport’s Board of Education meeting

The Dec. 8 Freeport Public Schools’ Board of Education meeting was full of holiday cheer and astounding congratulations for the academic and athletic excellence of Freeport’s high school students.

Opening the meeting, Freeport High School Principal Giselle Campbell-Ham introduced the Caprice String Ensemble, who performed a holiday classical piece, followed by the first live performance of the Freeport High School Select Chorale under the expert direction of Ms. Monique Campbell-Retzlaff. The Chorale performed three beautiful holiday pieces, helping to spread cheer to those attending the meeting.

The board members and administrators then recognized the top 10 students of the Class of 2022, the Freeport High School girls varsity tennis team. The board also lauded Freeport High School girls volleyball coach Eleanore Barry and cross-country coach Charles Gilreath, who both were named Conference Coach of the Year in their respective sports.

Board members and administrators introduced each student in the top 10 to the audience and highlighted their accomplishments. The district congratulates the Class of 2022 top 10: valedictorian Elise Smith, salutatorian Karina Rios, Vanessa Mendoza (3), Keyla Romero (4), Sameerah Lawal (5), Brenna Igneri (6), Bryant Pena (7), Gilbert Rosario Acevedo (8), Arianna Martinez (9) and Jillian Igneri (10).

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham expressed his appreciation to the students for being hardworking individuals.

“We are proud to recognize our top 10 of 2022. Who they are and all they have accomplished in their time at Freeport Public Schools is truly amazing,” said Dr. Kuncham. “They have excelled on so many levels and this is just the beginning of their lives. There is much more to come from them.”

Following the academic achievements of Freeport’s students, the board of education and administration then recognized the Freeport girls varsity tennis team and head coach Jennifer Lawlor for being Conference champions, having an undefeated 14-0 record for the season, being named a New York Scholar-Athlete team and having three All-County players.

“We are so pleased at the dedication and discipline of our student-athletes,” said Dr. Kuncham. “The girls varsity tennis team is a source of great pride for our district and their achievements this season are truly an inspiration.”

The district congratulates the Freeport High Schools girls varsity tennis team: Amanda Abreu Bueno, Tatiana Arieta, Naomi Belgrave, Sarah Boco, Clohie Clarke, Isabelle Edmond, Emilie Goez, Naya Hall, Nia Hall, Maria Hernandez, Deja McCurty-Ott, Bryana Quiros, Yomara Ramirez Vasquez and Delaney Sewer.
