Campaign: Waylyn Hobbs elected Hempstead mayor

Waylyn Hobbs Jr., a current Village of Hempstead trustee, is the apparent winner in the race for village mayor, defeating incumbent Don Ryan and Herberth Flores, the former Nassau County deputy director of minority affairs, and Lamont Johnson, a Hempstead Village trustee.

According to the Hobbs campaign, the candidate will officially declare victory in the election at a news conference Thursday afternoon, at which newly elected village officials will announce their priorities for the upcoming administration.

The Village of Hempstead is the state’s most populous incorporated village and has the largest African-American and Latino populations on Long Island.
