District closes Atkinson School over Covid concerns

Freeport School District officials closed the Caroline G. Atkinson Intermediate School this week out of precaution due to staff members testing positive for Covid-19 cases since Thursday.

Superintendent of Schools Kishore Kuncham said that while some staff members tested positive on Thursday and Friday last week, more positive cases appeared over the weekend.

While only a few staff members tested positive for Covid-19, contact tracing through the Nassau County Department of Health found that other staff would need to quarantine as well, district officials explained.

“With some of our staff under preventative quarantine, it causes operation issues,” Kuncham said. “So rather than close for two days or so, we decided to make the whole week remote-learning to ensure the safety of our staff and students.”

As of press time on Jan. 25, the Freeport School District had 177 positive cases among students, teachers and staff, according to the State Department of Health.

The district said it would update the numbers later today.
