Elmont vets host ninth annual bike blessings

The Elmont American Legion Riders of Post 1033 held their ninth annual Blessing of the Bikes on April 27. The local veterans’ tradition invited Freeport’s Deacon Bruce Burnham to spray holy water on more than 100 motorcycles to bless them and the 2019 riding season. Legion Rider President Bill Stegman said the event serves as a way to unite bikers and members of the Long Island community.

“This event kicks off the riding season and gets people out to meet with the riders and veterans,” Stegman said. “The event creates a positive relationship between the bikers and their community.”

The bike blessing was accompanied by a community barbeque, with all proceeds going to benefit veterans and their families. The Elmont Girl Scouts Troop 1335 also joined in this year’s fundraiser to donate about $100 to the veterans. Five members of Post 1033 formed Elmont’s branch of the American Legion Riders ten years ago in order to promote motorcycle safety and a social atmosphere for local riders. Elmont’s American Legion Riders Post 1033 also offers services in funeral processions and actively participates in local parades and ceremonies.
