Light Drizzle Five Towns after Tropical Storm Isaias
Long Island Rail Road service resumes on the Far Rockaway branch

The Five Towns, felt the effects of Tropical Storm Isaias as it made its way up the East Coast and slammed Nassau and Suffolk counties on Tuesday. The storm broughts heavy rain and winds, with gusts up to 70 mph. It could also bring flooding in low-lying areas near the coast.
The Long Island Rail Road service resumed on the Far Rockaway, Long Beach, Babylon and Port Washingtion branches. There is limited eastbound service on the Hempstead line. Debris is beig cleared off the tracks.
More than 320,00 PSEG-Long Island customers are still without power. According to PSEG, Lawrence has 1,177 customers without power. Inwood 1,081 customers who reported outages and Woodmeree has 990 as of 7:30 a.m.
Sparodic outages have been reported in other parts of the Five Towns. The estimated restoratiom time is Aug. 6 at 2 p.m. Multiple trees have been felled across Hempstead town, including at least a dozen in North Woodmere.
Inwood Fire Department crews staffed five trucks and responded to several calls, officials said, adding that people should stay away from downed wires, treat everything as if it is live and notify the fire department or the power company. Crews assisted in moving many trees to the side of the road to make way for emergency vehicles, fire officials said.
In Cedarhurst, mayor Benjamin Weinstock noted some safety precautions listed on the village’s website that residents should follow. “Avoid unnecessary outdoor activities as falling tree limbs and other wind-blown debris can cause serious injuries or death,” he said. “The safest place to weather the storm is indoors.”
To avoid flood damage to cars, the Cedarhurst allowed all residents in low-lying areas to park their vehicles behind Village Hall. Weinstock noted that if residents do park behind Village Hall, they should leave a note on the dashboard, with your name, address and the message: “Parked due to possible flooding conditions.”
Village of Lawrence officials reminded its residents and business owners that in case of an emergency call 911. For fire and medical emergencies only, you can also call the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department at (516) 569-4411. Village officials also noted that trucks will be out to monitor troublesome sites and the catch basins were checked and cleared of debris.
