Elmont high school students were awarded the New York State Student Stars Award by Sen. Todd Kaminsky for the excellence they demonstrated both inside and out of the classroom this school year at a ceremony held on May 16 at the Rockville Centre Recreation Center.

"The recipients of the New York State Senate Student Stars Award have distinguished themselves as leaders in their schools and our local community as a whole," Kaminsky said, before presenting local students with the award.

Part of NYS Senate District 9, Elmont schools are each eligible to select one student who has shown extraordinary academic and extracurricular prowess to receive the state senate’s Student Stars Award. Elmont Memorial High School, Sewanhaka High School, and the Harriet Eisman Community School each selected a student to receive the NYS Senate award.

Selected by Elmont Memorial High School to receive the Student Stars award, Devin Johnson served as president of both the student government club and the Key Club at the high school. Devin, who was known to regularly take efforts to sustain an inclusive environment for all at Elmont Memorial High School, plans to attend the University of Chicago. Mariangela Canale was chosen by Harriet Eisman Community School for being one the school’s highest achieving students and for frequently volunteering at events and workshops held by the school. Sewanhaka High School selected Suren P. Armogan, a member of the National Honor Society and GreenClub, to receive the Student Stars award. Armogan, on top of his academic success, volunteers with Long Island Cares to help deliver food and clothing across Long Island.

"I was pleased to recognize their achievements and join their families in celebrating their accomplishments,” Kaminsky said at the May 16 ceremony. “I look forward to seeing what is in store next for these talented students, as they continue to make their mark.”
