Lynbrook gets conference win

After dropping its first three Conference II games by a combined five goals, including two in overtime, Lynbrook girls’ lacrosse got a much-needed 15-6 victory at Floral Park on April 3.
Casey Kaplan and Jenna Hendrickson had four goals apiece and Elizabeth Murphy added a hat trick for the Lady Owls, who come off an eight-win 2018 campaign highlighted by a Class C first-round playoff triumph over Bethpage.
“We had some good non-league wins followed by three tough conference losses,” Lynbrook coach Vin Tetro said. “The girls used those as learning experiences and came back with a strong win.”
With a roster consisting of large junior and sophomore classes, Tetro is looking for the Lady Owls (4-3 overall) to improve as the season unfolds and peak at the right time. All three senior starters — Kaplan on attack, Jessica Woll on defense and Cariann Mackie in the midfield — are captains in their fourth varsity campaigns. “We’re expecting a lot of close games,” Tetro said.
Murphy, a junior attack who committed to the University of Cincinnati, led the team in scoring a year ago and earned All-Conference honors. She netted 38 goals and assisted on 20, and is off to a big start this spring with 20 goals and 17 assists through seven games. “She has amazing stick work and passes as well as she shoots,” Tetro said.

Kaplan, who has 11 goals thus far, is experienced, smart and composed from behind the cage. “She’s familiar with our offense and makes good decisions,” Tetro said. Another returning starter up front is junior Kayleigh Stalter, who brings a quality shot, a nonstop motor and the ability to come up clutch in the draw circle.
Hendrickson, a sophomore midfielder, handles approximately 90 percent of the draws, Tetro noted, and is “silky smooth.” She scored 40 goals last spring and already has 28 despite attracting more attention from defenses. “Jenna has an extremely hard shot and just keeps getting better,” he said.
Another sophomore middie, Maggie Bodian, is thriving in her first varsity season, proving difficult to beat on groundballs while adding speed and a defensive component to the position. Mackie is an aggressive defensive midfielder and is replaced by offensive-minded sophomore Mason Benevenuto when the Lady Owls gain possession. Junior Kate Foley, up from JV like Bodian, has played well on the defensive end.
For the first time since 2014, Lynbrook’s goalie isn’t named Hope Germanakos. Sophomore Madison Marchetta has emerged as the starter and had a breakout game against Farmingdale with 12 saves in a double-overtime defeat on April 1.
Woll is a steady defender with strong communication skills. She anchors a starting unit that includes juniors Lena Weinkauf, who has lockdown ability and ignites the transition game with impressive clears, and Felicia Guglielmo.
The Lady Owls made it three straight against non-league foes with a 14-5 win over Hewlett on April 4. Murphy had seven points and Stalter added four in a fundraiser game for HEADstrong Foundation for cancer.
