Gov. Cuomo allows for ceremonies

The coronavirus pandemic will not stop Lynbrook from honoring its heroes with a modified Memorial Day parade on Monday.

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at Merrick Road and Charles Street, and travel down Merrick Road to the Doughboy Monument.

"The parade is being held in remembrance for all those who gave their lives for our freedom," village officials said in a statement. "This will strictly be a vehicle parade."

Attendees of the event will be requested to follow all health and safety guidelines by maintaining a safe social distance along the route. No gatherings will be permitted.

Bill Halvorsen, the co-chairman of the East Rockaway parade, said that this year's festivities will be canceled because of health concerns over the coronavirus. No plans of rescheduling were in the works, he added.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at his daily briefing on Tuesday that small ceremonies would be permitted for Memorial Day. They must, however, be limited to 10 or fewer people, and social distancing — standing six feet apart — must be maintained to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Cuomo also encouraged car parades to honor the fallen on Memorial Day, which will be marked officially on Monday, May 25, ike Lynbrook will have, although the dates of ceremonies and parades may vary from community to community.
