One man killed, six injured in Freeport boat crash

Nassau County Homicide Detectives are investigating a fatal boating accident that occurred on Aug. 1, at Freeport Creek, near Cow Meadow Park. 

According to Nassau County Marine Bureau detectives, two boats collided on Freeport Creek at 6:45 p.m. When officers arrived, seven people were found injured in the accident. 

Some of the victims were pulled out of the water by nearby jet skiers on their own boats. 

All seven victims were transported to a local hospital.

Four of the victims had minor injuries, while two sustained serious trauma. A 25-year-old male had suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead by a hospital staff physician.  

The Freeport Fire and Police Department responded to the scene, as well as the Town of Hempstead Bay Constables, Nassau County Police and the fire departments of Merrick, Wantagh, Baldwin, Oceanside, Roosevelt and Point Lookout.

“All members came together as a unit and got the job done,” said Scott Braun, chief of the Freeport Fire Department. “Thank you to all the mutual aid departments and marine assets that assisted us. Great job done by all and our thoughts and prayers for the families involved.”
