Nassau County Robbery Squad detectives have arrested Michael Fox, 38, of Grand Avenue in Rockville Centre, and charged him with a series of bank robberies beginning in February. Two of the heists occurred in East Rockaway, the most recent the robbery of the Bank of America on Main Street on May 25.
Fox was charged with three counts of third-degree robbery, police said, and was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on May 28.
As reported in the Herald’s Feb. 4-10 issue, on Feb. 1, Nassau County Police Department detectives were seeking a man with a thin build who was wearing a navy blue hooded jacket and a Yankees baseball cap. After the May 25 robbery, they were seeking a man with a similar description who may have left the scene in a red vehicle.
Fox was also charged in connection with a Feb. 27 robbery of a Chase branch at 120 N. Village Ave. in Rockville Centre. In all three cases, the suspect presented a note to the teller demanding money and fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.
“I’m glad they caught him,” said the owner of a business across the street from Bank of America in East Rockaway. “I hope that the robberies stop now — I doubt it, though. For some reason, they like our banks.”
No one was injured in any of the robberies. Police declined to say how they traced the robberies to Fox.
