It was a solemn day for Bellmore and North Bellmore Fire Department service members who gathered once again to reflect on the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001. Dozens of neighbors attended to remember the fallen, as well.
The annual ceremony was held at the Bellmore Fire Department’s 9/11 Memorial on Pettit Avenue, commemorating those lost in the terrorist attacks 19 years ago. Masks covering the rows of saluting service members and attendees posed as a stark reminder of the current Covid-19 pandemic.
The departments laid wreaths dedicated to Bellmore volunteers and New York City firefighters Kevin Prior and Adam Rand, who died while assisting survivors trapped in the towers, and volunteer Sean Michael McCarthy, who responded to Ground Zero and died from 9/11-related cancer in 2008.
