The Wheeler Avenue and James A. Dever elementary schools in Valley Stream were put on lock-out yesterday at 1 p.m. on May 18, according to an email sent to parents by District 13 Superintendent Judith LaRocca.

During lock-out procedures, no outside personnel are allowed inside the schools until futher notice. Homeland Security was conducting an investigation nearby Blakeman Drive near Long Island Jewish Valley Stream Hospital. The cause of the investigation remains unknown.

The lock-out was lifted near 2:15 p.m., according to a second email sent to parents. "Homeland Security has advised that there may be ongoing police presence near the hospital, however the situation has been resolved and it is safe to lift the lockout at this time," said LaRocca. "As always, safety is our number one priority, and we thank you for your cooperation during the lockout."

Dismissal proceeded as usual Tuesday afternoon.
