On Friday, March 27, the Wantagh Fire Department announced that it will be closing its firehouses “for everything except response to alarms.” The Wantagh Fire Department has six stations, with five of them housing engines or ladders.

According to public information officer Kevin Regan, the department will remain “fully in service and ready to respond to all emergencies.

“We are working diligently to maintain services for our residents while doing everything we can to protect the health and safety of our members,” Regan wrote in a release.

Regan detailed that the leadership of the Wantagh Fire Department and Fire District maintain contact regularly by computer and phone, and when necessary, meet in outdoor or large open spaces to adhere to social distancing. He also confirmed that the department’s equipment has been cleaned and disinfected after each use.

The department reiterates that, if you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 and are calling a Wantagh FD dispatcher, to please indicate so. The dispatcher will ask health-related questions. Fire department members that are called to enter a resident’s home will be following strict precautions, including wearing masks, gloves and surgical gowns as well as maintaining a safe distance.

“All of these procedures are being taken in order to protect our members from potential exposure so that we can continue to fulfil our mission in providing Fire, Rescue and EMS services to our community,” Regan wrote.
