Cops: One charged with attempted murder in Valley Stream shootout

A Brooklyn man was charged with attempted murder in a shootout between him and another man that reportedly took place outside a home on Sherbourne Road early on Dec. 23, according to police. Police are still seeking the other suspect.

According to detectives, Rufino Rodriguez, 24, was leaving a house party on Sherbourne at 4:10 a.m. when another man walked up to him and fired multiple shots at Rodriguez as he was getting into his car. When police responded the reportedly found Rodriguez had suffered a gunshot wound to his leg and he was taken to a local hospital.

Video evidence from nearby houses revealed that upon being shot, Rodriguez had taken out a gun of his own and began firing at the suspect, who at that point police said had gotten back into his own vehicle and was driving away south on Sherbourne.

Rodriguez was arrested on Jan. 13 after the investigation and was charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree reckless endangerment, first degree criminal use of a firearm and second-degree and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon for his role in the shootout. He is represented by the Legal Aid Society, which does not comment on cases.

Police are still seeking the identity of the second man involved in the incident.
