Disgraced former U.S. Rep. George Santos, who lied about his past and swindled donors, was sentenced to over 7 years in prison on April 25.
Santos, who served in Congress for barely a year before being expelled after a vote by the House of Representatives, pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft and wire fraud last August.
He is set to surrender to the courts on July 25 for his 87-month sentence. After serving his time in prison, he will be under supervised release for two years.
In addition, Santos will have to pay back the over $373,000 that he stole, $200 of which he has to pay back today. He must also forfeit over $200,000, which will go to his victims, according to prosecutors.
Santos was seen crying during the sentencing and struggled to articulate his thoughts during his final statement to the court.
Some supported the former representative outside of the courtroom. David Rem, who claimed to be a friend of Santos, maintained his support for the New York Republican. He pushed for President Trump to issue a pardon for him.
Roberta Reordan, a state Department of Labor commissioner, testified against Santos in court regarding his theft of unemployment funds. While she expressed remorse over the situation, she maintained that Santos was responsible for the sentencing he is facing.
“It’s sad that he’s in this situation,” she said, but added that “it is a situation of his own making.”
