On Thursday, Sept. 17, Republican candidate for New York's 2nd Congressional District Andrew Garbarino will release his first television ad focused on the general election. He previously released an ad in June focused on his primary election race.

The most recent ad is a 30-second tv spot that focuses on defending and supporting law enforcement. It will begin airing on Sept. 17 at 6 a.m. and remain on air for two weeks.

Garbarino, who hopes to suceed Pete King, a Seaford Republican who has represented the South Shore in the House of Representatives since 1993,  paralleled his fervor to advocate for police with King's. "In congress, just like Pete King, I'll back the blue," Garbarino said at the tail end of the ad.

In an exlcusive interview with the Herald on Wednesday, Garbarino doubled down on stressing law and order.

"When you see what's going on nationwide, and you look at what happened on Long Island years ago with MS-13, I feel like public safety means more to us because we know what could happen," Garbarino told the Herald. "I think public safety, like being able to take your kids to the park, or walking home from school, that will resonate with my voters. That resonates with me."

Garbarino laid out a few more of his focuses in the ad.

"I grew up here on Long Island," he said in the ad. "My values are just like yours: Defend the middle class, keep taxes down and respect law enforcement."

The Suffolk-based Republican told the Herald that he believes that Long Island, along with the New York metropolitan area, have been the "epicenter" of the coronavirus in the United States and it is time that the federal government step in.

"We need to have some sort of bill to get funding to localities. Just like after [Superstorm] Sandy,  [Federal Emergency Management Agency] worked with our towns and counties and said, 'okay you got hit with an awful, awful storm,'" Garbarino said. "Now with Covid-19, should be worked with that same way...We need funding without cutting resources."

He finished by telling the Herald that, if elected, he would be seeking a "federal package now."

The ad will also be released on Garbarino's social media accounts on Sept. 17 at 7 a.m., including on his YouTube page.
