County legislator holds latest online virus update

On Tuesday, March 24, Nassau County Legislator Steve Rhoads posted a video on Facebook to update his followers on the most recent developments in the county’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The near 11-minute video, showing Rhoads in his home office, details safety precautions and warnings to adhere to social distancing. He also gave an updated timeline.

“Both the governor’s office and health professionals (in Nassau County) believe that we will reach the apex, the height of the number of cases we’ll have, or the top of the curve, in approximately 14 to 21 days,” Rhoads said. “The hope is, at that point, the curve will flatten and begin to come down as we come out the backside of this outbreak. So, hope is on the horizon.”

Rhoads claimed it was “common sense” to continually test those with symptoms and separate those who have the virus from the general population.

“Help the sick people get well, and help the healthy people stay healthy,” Rhoads said.

He also gave an update on Nassau County’s parks, stating that they are only open for walking and bike riding. All basketball courts, tennis courts, roller skating rinks, etc., will be closed until further notice.

The county legislator also hears the concerns of county residents who may be dealing with price gouging in local stores. He tells those that are facing price gouging to send an email with their experience to pricegouging@nassaucountyny.gov.

Rhoads ended the video with a flicker of positive thinking.

“We are hopeful to see the tail end of this thing in the coming weeks,” Rhoads said.
