Nassau County police are investigating a fatal car accident that occurred on Tuesday night at the Long Island Rail Road station in Merrick.

According to detectives, Lloyd Sagendorph, 30, of Bellmore, was driving a 2007 Hyundai Sonata eastbound in the parking  lot between Hewlett Avenue and Henry Street around 6:30 p.m. when he struck a light pole there.

Witnesses then observed Sagendorph back up his car and continue westbound at high speed, where he collided into one of the concrete train trestle stanchions. The impact of the crash caused Sagendorph to suffer multiple trauma injuries, police said.

Authorities were dispatched to the scene and Sagendorph was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.

On Tuesday night, police taped off the easternmost section of the parking lot to investigate. The front end of Sagendorph's gray sedan was badly damaged in the crash.

The investigation into what may have caused the accident is ongoing.
