Family, friends and Sea Cliff residents joined John Gonzalez to celebrate the opening of his Sea Cliff Arts Council exhibit on June 7.

“From Colombia to Sea Cliff”, a collection of 15 acrylic and oil paintings, was created by the local artist, based on the journey from his birthplace to his current home.

The Sea Cliff Village Library will host the exhibit through Aug. 31. Meaghan Travis, the arts council’s chief operating artist praised the “vibrant storytelling ability in his work” and added “that's one of the best things about this community and the art here.”

Featuring portraits, landscapes and lacrosse games, the exhibit highlights the influences of Colombian culture and his life on Long Island.

Gonzalez signs each of his pieces with “Gonzo,” his nickname from when he played lacrosse, and said that he felt validated having his art on display with the council.

“I don't think I have the talent (that) many (do),” he said, “but I would find it difficult to find someone that has as much passion.”
