Kindergarten students learn about Lunar New Year

To ring in the Lunar New Year, John Street School kindergartners learned about the Chinese custom and how it is traditionally celebrated.

Lunar New Year is one of the most important holidays in Chinese culture and the year of the rabbit began on Jan. 22. The young students listened to read-aloud books from author and illustrator Grace Lin, whose children’s books such as “Bringing in the New Year” and her latest “Chloe’s Lunar New Year” are inspired by the traditions she experienced in her childhood.

The elementary schoolers also watched videos of the Lunar New Year Festival, a Dragon Dance parade and a Lions Dance. The kids got into the spirit by making their own dragon masks and ended the day by completing an alphabet Chinese New Year letter search.
