Riesterer’s Bakery celebrates 90th anniversary

Riesterer's Bakery in West Hempstead is set to hold a celebration on Oct. 5 to mark its 90th anniversary, which will feature live music, free coffee, cake, cupcakes and drinks, as well as bouncy houses and slides for children.

Located at 282 Hempstead Ave. in West Hempstead, Riesterer’s Bakery was founded by August "Gus" Riesterer in 1931, after the baker moved from Germany to the United States in search of a better life. Riesterer and his wife opened the bakery during the Great Depression in West Hempstead. Today, Riesterer’s son, Karl, and his grandson, Karl Jr., have kept the bakery up and running. Karl Jr.’s cake replicas of landmarks in and around West Hempstead, such as Chestnut Street School and the West Hempstead Post Office, are cherished by the community.

The celebration of the bakery’s 90th anniversary is open to all community members and is planned to take place from 2 to 6 p.m.
