The charmed run of Melanie Martinez, which provided thrills to thousands of residents in Baldwin, came to an end Tuesday night. The 17-year-old Baldwin Senior High School student was voted off NBC’s hit show The Voice, along with fellow contestant Amanda Brown.

Although it wasn’t possible for students, administrators and teachers to reach their school buildings during the 10-day hiatus after Hurricane Sandy, the time off was anything but a vacation. A Board of Education meeting at the Steele School on Nov. 14 allowed parents, board trustees and other community members a chance to catch up on what’s been happening at Baldwin schools.

The return of a number of whimsical scarecrows to Baldwin’s streets was a welcome sign to many in the hamlet. The scarecrows — entries in a combination contest/civic pride movement initiated by the Baldwin Civic Association on Oct. 20 — signaled that, for some at least, life was beginning to settle down.

While some parts of Baldwin are almost completing their post-Sandy rebuild, others are still very much in the throes of the hurricane. One of the most insidious threats quite literally overflowed on Barnes Avenue, just west of 3rd Place, where a sewer erupted.
