The Baldwin school district issued layoff notices to 99 of its teachers at the beginning of the month. The news was met with gasps from most associated with the district, but according to both the Baldwin Teachers Association and the district, the situation, while far from rosy, may not be as bleak as it first appears. more

Baldwin’s school superintendent Dr. James Mapes, an educator for 43 years, will retire in June. He said he believes Baldwin will be on firm fiscal footing within four years.

A round of applause accompanied the passage of a motion to allow the East Rockaway school district to lease Baldwin’s unused school buildings.

School district update:

Although it wasn’t possible for students, administrators and teachers to reach their school buildings during the 10-day hiatus after Hurricane Sandy, the time off was anything but a vacation. A Board of Education meeting at the Steele School on Nov. 14 allowed parents, board trustees and other community members a chance to catch up on what’s been happening at Baldwin schools. more

When the Baldwin Board of Education postponed a budget ratification vote on Feb. 15, Superintendent James Mapes requested the delay to “allow a number of situations to clarify.” One of those clarifications materialized last week, and the resulting compromise will likely mean the salvation of Baldwin’s full-day kindergarten program. more
