After Baldwin firefighters found a man lying unconscious on an apartment floor during a fire last Saturday, he died at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside.

Police confirmed the man’s death, but had not released his identity or confirm the exact time of death as of press time Monday.

Baldwin firefighters responded to a call on July 4 at 11:30 p.m., and saw heavy, dark smoke coming from two second-floor windows of an apartment building as they arrived at the scene on Old Mill Road. Once the man was discovered, Chief Karen Bendel said he was removed and CPR was administered. He was then transported to SNCH.The fire took roughly a half hour to extinguish, Bendel said, adding that it was contained to one apartment.

Its cause was still under investigation on Monday.

“It was a valiant effort by all of the firefighters,” Bendel said. “We gave the man as much of a chance as we could.”
