Baldwin budget goes down at 55.8 percent, both challengers elected

A proposed budget of $121.6 million was voted down in Baldwin as only 55.8 percent of voters backed the spending plan. Because the proposal would have increased taxes by more than the state's tax cap — set at 3.14 percent in Baldwin — a 60 percent supermajority was required for passage.

3483 voters cast ballots in the controversial election. 1945 of these voted for the budget, and 1538 said no to the plan.

Both challengers for school board seats, Joel Press and Deborah Rebore, were victorious. Incumbents Mary Clark and Kim Taylor will be replaced.

Baldwin was one of seven districts on Long Island that sought to exceed its tax cap. (Long Island has 124 districts in all.) Baldwin was joined by Manhasset, North Babylon, Sachem, East Quogue and South Country in failing to pass a spending plan that pierced the cap. The only district successful in such an attempt was Bay Shore.

The Board of Education will present a revised budget proposal to the community later in the year.
