As part of the science elective forensics course, 31 Baldwin High School students recently visited the DNA Learning Center West in Lake Success to participate in Forensics DNA Profiling: D1S80.
Hosted by Cold Spring Harbor Labs, students extracted, prepared, analyzed and studied their own DNA samples throughout the day for a specific genetic sequence on the first chromosome using gel electrophoresis and a chip analyzer.
They were able to see firsthand current and cutting-edge DNA analysis technology that can be used to test much smaller DNA samples more accurately than most conventional methods.
