As Time Goes By

Edward Weston: Life Work
The exhibit surveys the 50-year career of a giant of 20th-century photography. The photographs of Edward Weston (1886-1958) capture the rhythms, patterns, and interconnections between nature and human experience. Weston’s photographs are renowned for their sensuous print quality and for the rich black and white scale the photographer achieved during printing. Through July 24. 1930: Art in America
Drawing upon works from the Hofstra University Museum collection and loans from varied collections, this original exhibit provides a “snapshot” of the visual arts in America during the 1930s, in celebration of Hofstra’s 75th anniversary. Richard Avedon: Photographer of Influence
A retrospective of the career of photographer Richard Avedon, who worked in New York from the 1950s through to the 21st century. Highly regarded for revolutionizing the genre of portraiture, Avedon created some of the most iconic works of the 20th century. He is known for his depictions of politicians, artists, models, and Hollywood stars, among them Audrey Hepburn, Bob Dylan, Marilyn Monroe, and Andy Warhol. Opening Saturday, May 21, through Sept. 4. Robert Hite: Imagined Histories
Sculptures sited among Hudson Valley landscapes are seen in this exhibit. Hite is a sculptor, painter and photographer whose work reflects nature and the surrounding landscape. From 2006 to 2010, he installed and photographed a series of mixed/media architectural sculptures called Imagined Histories: Hudson Valley Landscapes. The exhibition includes a sculpture and black and white photographs from the series. Opening Saturday, May 21, through Sept. 4. Plaza Theatrical’s Performing Arts Academy
The Performing Arts Academy is looking for children in grades 4-8 to appear in Camp Rock. Auditions will be held Monday and Tuesday, May 23-24, at 7 p.m., with callback auditions on Wednesday, May 25, 7 p.m. Prepare 32 bars of a Broadway song of your choice or from Camp Rock and bring sheet music in the proper key. Photo Competition
The Long Island Center of Photography is sponsoring its fifth annual photo competition. The competition is open to all photographers and includes all types of photography from traditional to new media. All photographers, amateur and professional, are invited to submit their most current work for consideration. Entries will be judged by R. Wayne Parsons, President of the Soho Photo Gallery in Manhattan and regular photography critic of the New York Photo Review. Winning photos will be exhibited at the African American Museum in Hempstead. Awards and prizes will be presented at an artist’s reception on Sept. 25.
