Fatal single-car accident on Grand Avenue

While traveling on southbound Grand Avenue early Sunday morning, a man died in a single car accident after striking a utility pole and crashing into an unoccupied building, causing his vehicle to burst into flames, police said.

According to detectives, at 4:01 a.m., Gregory Balmir, 42, crossed over two lanes of traffic at the corner of Woodside Avenue and struck a utility pole in front of 1575A Grand Avenue. His car then struck the unoccupied building at 1577 Grand. Balmir was pronounced dead at the scene.

Candles were placed at the crash site shortly after the incident.
