Baldwin resident Kate Anne McNeil was laid to rest on March 22, five days after she was struck and killed crossing Sunrise Highway near the Baldwin train station. She was 20.

"Katie," as she was known by many friends, graduated St. Christopher's School in 2003, Kellenberg Memorial High School in 2007 and was attending Manhattan College.

Her friends remember her as a caring friend who loved New York City, the beach and the Dave Matthews Band.

"As everyone has been saying, Kate is the nicest and most positive person I have ever met," said Samantha Lynn, a friend. "Nothing bothered her, and as she would say, 'It's all good.'"

Richard Bambach, McNeil's lifelong Baldwin neighbor, said he remembers the two of them spending time together nearly every day after school and during vacations.

"We went to the same school all the way through high school, so we were together for a majority of our lives," Bambach said. "She was by far the nicest person I have ever met. I was really hurt when I found out that she passed, it felt like I lost a very close family member."

A Facebook page, "St. Chris '03 RIP Kate McNeil" was created in her memory, and many friends left kind words about her.

Gregory wrote: "RIP Kate, you were definitely one of the nicest people I’ve ever met."

Mike wrote: "Still cant believe this ... Kate was by far the nicest, sweetest girl I ever met .... Rest in peace, Kate ... Watch over us in heaven, please."

Funeral arrangements were handled by Cecere-Pensa Funeral Home. A contribution for a scholarship in memory of McNeil can be made to the Office of College Advancement at Manhattan College, Bronx, N.Y. 10471.

According to Nassau police, McNeil was crossing Sunrise Highway near Central Avenue with Samantha Koch, 20, and Bryan McNeil, 25, at approximately 11 p.m. on March 17 when the three were struck by a 2000 Chevy, being driven by Allen Seinetar, 55, of Wading River.

Kate McNeil was rushed to South Nassau Communities Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Bryan and Samantha were listed as in stable condition.
