Fran Manas’s Home and Career students at Baldwin Middle School took a multi-cultural eating tour of the Lower East Side last month. They walked and talked and ate their way through the Jewish East Side, Chinatown and Little Italy. Along the way, they discussed changing trends in immigrant populations, tenement living and sweat shops, and the influence of food on culture. The students sampled ethnic fare such as plantains, halvah, dried roses, spiced tofu, and sopressata.
