Kim Taylor will become the newest member of the Baldwin Board of Education on July 1. She will replace incumbent Carl Williams, who was voted out in the May 18 election.

Taylor, 47, has lived in Baldwin for 15 years. She has an 8-year-old daughter attending Brookside School. She currently works as a speech pathologist for Nassau County.

Baldwin Herald: So, you'll be a new face on the Baldwin school board, but where else would residents have seen you around town?

Kim Taylor: I am a naturally friendly person, so I tend to smile at the people I see as I run my errands around town on the weekend or walk my dogs throughout my neighborhood. I am also very involved in the activities at my daughter's elementary school, so most of the parents know me there.

BH: You currently work as a speech pathologist for the Nassau County Early Intervention Program. For our readers, can you explain what that job entails and what your responsibilities are?

KT: I evaluate and provide speech, language and sometimes feeding therapy for children ages birth to three years. I usually work with them in their homes but sometimes I see them at their daycare centers. Because the children I work with are so young, I have to help them reach their therapy goals through play.

I have worked as a speech pathologist in Nassau County for the past 15 years, so I have worked closely with many families. It is such an awesome feeling when I see a child that I worked with years ago at three years old, and they are now so grown up and doing wonderfully in middle school.

BH: How do you like the job?

KT: I love my job! I am helping to develop and enhance a child's communication skills. The first three years are crucial time for language development and I consider myself so lucky to be a part of this amazing process. Did I mention that I get to play all day?

BH: We all love our free time. How much do you have and how do you spend it?

KT: I am lucky because my work day ends relatively early, around 3 p.m. In the evenings and on weekends, I like to eat dinner with my daughter, spend time with my friends, read or listen to music.
