CRED or “Cool Rock Education,” is what The Rock Underground, a full-service music school, is all about. If you grew up in the days of garage bands, you will wonder why this incredible concept took so long to become a reality.

Excitement starts before entering, since you can view rare vintage and new musical instruments from the sidewalk. If a class or rehearsal happens to be in session, you might be able to watch that too. Imagine your 5-year-old playing in a rock band, or you, as an adult, living out your own dream. From youngsters to adults, and beginners to advanced, any musician at The Rock Underground can end up on stage.

The program starts with weekly 45-minute music lessons on the student’s instrument of choice. Instructors are not only accredited, but most are touring musicians for well-known groups.

During the lessons, students learn to play specific songs, which are taken from the current theme show (such as the Led Zeppelin family tree, or Pink Floyd). Then, once a week, they partake in a live practice session with several other students who have different instruments, hence, forming a band.

Naturally, students are highly motivated to practice, since they know that the other musicians are depending on them. Using top quality equipment and a “live room” with a stage, it’s fun and it’s Real. And, several times a year The Rock Underground hosts live shows at local rock clubs, during the day, of course, since children are involved.

At The Rock Underground, music education doesn't stop with learning to play an instrument and performing. Other programs include original song writing and the recording of music. Students can learn from recording engineers.

The school houses a recording studio, a stage, control room, a drum shack, lesson rooms, a guitar store, and a student lounge. They do repairs on all instruments and amplifiers.

Programs are divided into different levels, starting with the Rock Star-ters. Offered are lessons on guitar, bass, drums and keyboards, and even vocal.

Students can learn to read music, do chord progressions, tune and fix their instruments, and use professional software. Independent bands can get direction, or rent space for practice or recording.

Those involved with The Rock Underground are enthusiastic and love rock ‘n' roll. One visit to this unique school will tell you why. The key people are Paul Casanova, the musical director; Bill Handy, who mans the store and recording studio; and Steve Eplan, the general manager.
