A man lying on the Long Island Rail Road tracks was struck and killed by a train just east of the Baldwin Long Island Rail Road station last Wednesday afternoon, according to a Metropolitan Transit Authority spokeswoman, who added the man was unauthorized to be on the tracks.
At 1:16 p.m., a train traveling westbound at about 40 MPH into the Baldwin station hit the man. As the train passed the Brookside Avenue overpass, the conductor observed a body laying on the tracks, hit the emergency brake application and blew the horn. “As he approached,” an MTA spokeswoman said of the conductor, “he saw a man lying face up who made no effort to get out of the way.”
The man was indentified as a 63-year-old from Freeport. No name was disclosed. He was pronounced dead at scene.
The investigation is ongoing, but all signs point to a suicide, the MTA spokeswoman said.
Service was suspended temporarily in the afternoon, but was running on a 15 to 20-minute delay by the peak rush hour travel times.
