Police shoot, kill second pit bull that attacked North Merrick woman

At around 3 p.m. on Oct. 17, Nassau County Police shot and killed the second of two pit bulls that mauled 62-year-old Shashi Sharma in late September at the Brookside School in North Merrick, digging its teeth into her arms, legs and head.

Police had shot the first of the two pit bulls at the Brookside School on the day of the attack. The second dog had eluded police ever since.

Police have confirmed the second dog's identity and believe it was the same dog that attacked Sharma. A Town of Hempstead Animal Control Unit was on hand to assist in the dog's identification on Monday, police said.

Witnesses said police chased the brown-and-white pit bull from Jim-Jam Cleaners on Jerusalem Avenue in North Merrick, near the Southern State Parkway, to the Precious Kids II day-care center, where they shot the dog dead.

Police at the 1st Precinct said they were flooded with phone calls from relieved parents saying that they once again can let their children out to play. Both the North Merrick and North Bellmore school districts had kept children inside during recess for fear of a second attack.

Sharma is said to be recovering from her severe wounds.
