Re-elect Mary Clark, Carl Williams to Baldwin school board

Posted

The Baldwin community is fortunate this year: There are six intelligent, motivated candidates running for two seats on the Board of Education. But with tough times ahead, the school district needs proven leaders to help weather the coming storm. We believe those leaders are Mary Clark and Carl Williams, and we encourage residents to cast their vote for the incumbents on Tuesday.

Clark has become something of a parent member on the board. She looks not only at the cost of a district program or service, but how it affects children and their education. For example, while there are obvious benefits to the board's seeking to enroll in the state's free and reduced breakfast and lunch program, Clark has pointed out that the menu does not offer healthy choices for students and has brought this to the attention of those in charge. She is not afraid to challenge or question policies or procedures she does not fully understand or support.

Williams, appointed by the board last year, has proven to be a quick learner. His strategy of listening and learning about a topic before speaking about it has served him well, and we believe he will continue to be a valuable asset to the Baldwin community.

We urge the four challengers to stay involved in the schools. George Siberon, Gregory McGlynn, Jack McCloy and Kim Taylor have much to offer Baldwin.

On Tuesday, the polls will be open at Baldwin High School from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. We urge residents to show their support for their schools and library.
