Swastikas scrawled at Baldwin Jewish Center

Posted

Two swastikas were drawn on the side doors of the Baldwin Jewish Center between May 15 and May 16, Nassau police reported.

According to Nassau First Squad detectives, the anti-Jewish symbols were each about four inches wide and done in black magic marker. The drawings were done sometime between noon on May 15 and 9:30 a.m. the next morning.

Officials at the Baldwin Jewish Center quickly erased the swastikas, but were still upset about the graffiti.

Fritzi Wolk, one of three presidents at the Baldwin Jewish Center, said she felt "disgust" upon discovering the swastikas when she came in to work Sunday morning. She said her first impression was that kids had drawn the symbols, as the synagogue is on the way to Baldwin High School. The property has been vandalized in the past, she said.

"It's mischief," Wolk said of the incident. "It's nothing new. It could have been done in all of two seconds."

Nassau police are investigating the incident and ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
