Town recycles old Christmas trees at Mulchfest

More than 100 Town of Hempstead residents recycled their Christmas trees at Mulchfest at Baldwin Harbor Park this weekend to clear this post-holiday season.

Each year the Town of Hempstead hosts Mulchfest — a tree disposal program in partnership with the Norman J. Levy park, where they recycled discarded Christmas trees, which get turned into bags of mulch on Jan. 7 and Jan. 8 at Baldwin Harbor Park located at 3232 Grand Ave from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days.

Workers from the Town of Hempstead set up four large trucks and mulch machine on Jan. 7 and Jan. 8 at Baldwin Harbor park where they serviced more than 100 Town of Hempstead residents — taking Christmas trees from their cars and disposing of them into the mulch machine.

Town workers funneled the trees into the wood chipper and bagged the shredded mulch into large cardboard bags on site, which were then given to community members to use on their gardens or lawns once the spring season arrives. Any left over mulch is given to the Nigerian Dwarf goats at Norman J. Levy Park, who recycle by feasting on the mulch.
