A Bellmore man was arrested and charged with fifth-degree drug possession after he allegedly attempted to elude New York State troopers on the Southern State Parkway, and, according to state police, was caught with two grams of crack cocaine.

According to officials, Sonny Cayaban, 39, was spotted by troopers in a tan Chevrolet Malibu near Newbridge Road in Bellmore. Police said he was doing 84 miles per hour in a 55-mph zone. Cayaban got off the parkway at Newbridge Road, where he sent police on a short chase.

In addition to drug possession, Cayaban was charged with fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle in the third degree, resisting arrest and several traffic violations, including driving without a license.

Cayaban was arraigned in 1st District Court in Hempstead. Cayaban pleaded not guilty. He is being represented by the Legal Aid Society, which, as a matter of policy, does not comment on cases.
