Bellmore residents opposing proposed White Castle

Posted

Eileen Casazza says that White Castle is not what Bellmore residents crave.

Casazza, who heads the Bellmore Preservation Group, is opposing a proposed 24-hour White Castle fast-food restaurant at Sunrise Highway and St. Marks Avenue.

A meeting sponsored by the group is planned for Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the Bellmore United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. The group contends that the eatery would, if approved, increase traffic and noise levels in the surrounding residential neighborhood. Members also said they believed it would invite loitering and vandalism late into the night and early morning.

State Sen. Charles Fuschillo Jr., a Republican from Merrick, came out against the proposed restaurant in a Sept. 8 letter to Town of Hempstead Board of Zoning Appeals Chairman Gerald Wright.

"Since the proposed site will only increase traffic congestion for the residents of the area, I am opposed to the opening of a White Castle restaurant," Fuschillo wrote. "Therefore, I request that their application be denied.

The Board of Zoning Appeals hearing is scheduled for Feb. 10 at 9:30 a.m.
